Since March 2004, the service for pilgrims in Trier has been considerable improved. The pilgrimage office of the Trier St. James’s Brotherhood has opened its doors in cooperation with and in the rooms of the Cathedral Information (opposite the Cathedral).

Pilgrims’ ID cards are issued here and the pilgrimage stamp awarded. In addition, the specially schooled employees of the Cathedral Information can assist in looking for accommodations or in working out a continuing route. A selection of literature and pilgrimage souvenirs are also on offer. A bronze St. James shell (scallop shell) at the entrance to the Cathedral Information refers to the pilgrimage office.

(The care of pilgrims on their way to Santiago, Rome, or Jerusalem has a long tradition in Trier. Up to the time of the French Revolution, a St. James’s Brotherhood and a hostel cared for pilgrims for as long as 500 years.
The Trier St. James’s Brotherhood, refounded in 2003, views itself as continuing this tradition. In the Christian spirit, its presently 70 members care for the constantly growing numbers of people who make their way on foot, by bicycle, or on horseback to one of the medieval pilgrims’ goals.
